7th grade math broke out of their rational operations unit! Students worked in groups to solve rational operations problems, and their answers became the codes to get into the breakout boxes. Once they got into the first box, they were surprised to find another locked box. This was the only box that had nothing to do with math - they were given a riddle to find their final key. Using their given riddles, students had to think creatively to find their final key. Some keys were hidden in a soap dispenser, under stools, in a bucket of pencils, and hanging on bulletin boards or posters. And, for all of their hard work, students were rewarded with sweet treats in their final locked boxes! Nice job #VanguardPride 7th graders!

If you have ever heard a teenager say, “That’s cap,” they are saying that’s a lie. #VanguardPride students in 7th grade math played a game called "That’s Cap" to review rational number operations. The students were shown pictures of problems already solved with work, and they had to decide if the problem was solved correctly. If it was, they held up a sign that said "That's Right!" and if the problem as wrong, they had to fix the problem and hold up a sign that said, "That's Cap!" Most of the problems were cap, and the students loved yelling, "That's Cap!"

7th grade math reviewed multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers by speed dating. Every student was given a different multiplication or division problem involving positives and negatives that they had to solve. Students then had to trade their problem with another student and solve it within a minute. After a minute, students had to find a new partner to trade problems with. Students had to keep finding new partners until they had solved all of the problems. Another example of the creative ways our #VanguardPride teachers keep our students engaged!

It's Fire Prevention Week and Black Earth and Mazomanie Fire Departments brought out their trucks! The elementary students heard about fire prevention, high-fived a fully dressed firefighter, went inside the fire trucks, and met Sparky! Sparky even had time for a picture next to the Vanguard emblem! Thank you Black Earth and Mazomanie Fire Departments for taking time to educate our students on fire prevention and what to do in case of a fire. An even bigger THANK YOU for what you do every day to help keep us safe! We are so grateful for our supportive #VanguardPride community!

#VanguardPride Middle School and High School students toured a community local business! They are learning about what their business offers, and working on their social communications skills. Students prepare each month for their monthly community outing by doing research on the business, role playing, calling the business, and practicing questions to ask the employees. Their first outing this year was to Pecks Farm.

In Ms. Frannie's 4k class we have been talking about apples. We tasted red, yellow and green apples and labeled the parts of an apple. In this Directed Drawing project we practiced following directions, fine motor skills, and writing our name! Look how cute our Apples turned out! Nice job #VanguardPride 4K-ers!

Ms.Spahn's 4th grade class is learning all about plants and animals in science class. On Tuesday, students took part in an experiment where they tried to pick up different foods using a variety of tools. These tools symbolized a bird's beak. Students learned that the shape of a bird's beak determines what it can eat. An animal's structure fits its function! #VanguardPride

The next new staff member we'd like to introduce is our new 4th Grade teacher, Courtney Spahn! "I am excited to begin my teaching career at Wisconsin Heights! This spring I graduated from Edgewood College with a degree in Elementary Education and ESL Education. I have always dreamed of being a teacher, and I can’t believe the time has finally come. Throughout college, I worked for my hometown’s recreation department where I taught a variety of different classes ranging from tee-ball to cooking. I grew up in Middleton on my family’s dairy farm. We raised cows, chickens, and goats. It may seem silly, but each goat has its own name. My students will definitely see lots of pictures of them throughout the year. In my free time, I enjoy being outside. Some of my favorite things to do outside include hiking and hammocking. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends playing card and board games. I am looking forward to an amazing first year!" We're so glad to have you, Courtney! #VanguardPride

It's time to welcome our new staff members for the 2023-24 school year! First up is our Language Arts/Social Studies Intern, Alexis Hauser! Alexis lives in Madison with her dog, Lady. They enjoy exploring the outdoors together and visiting family. Lady is always excited to sniff out a new adventure! Alexis will be graduating from UW-Whitewater this winter with her degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education. Alexis graduated from Madison East but grew up in a small town, and is excited to return to a close-knit community. Being in a small school allowed Alexis to be involved in many different activities, such as FFA, the drama club, and sports. She is excited to see her new middle schoolers find their own place in the school community! Alexis has wanted to be a teacher for as long as she can remember, and is so excited to be teaching language arts! For the last year, she has also been a substitute teacher in various schools in Dane County. Alexis enjoys reading, scrapbooking, sewing, and spending time with family and friends. You’ll never find her without a book! Welcome to the #VanguardPride team, Alexis! We're glad to have you!
