WISCONSIN HEIGHTS STUDENTS EXCEL AT 2024 NATIONAL HISTORY DAY CONTEST National History Day Contest Draws More Than 3,000 Participants from across the United States Students in Kathy Haig’s sophomore research class at Wisconsin Heights Middle and High School completed projects in one of five categories: documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, or website to compete in the 2024 National History Day® (NHD) National Contest. The regional and state events were held in Madison, WI in February and April, and the national event will be June 9-13, 2024, in College Park, Maryland. The 2024 contest theme was “Turning Points in History.” Ten of the twelve members of the class qualified for the state contest, and then, in a stupendous achievement, Brenna S.’s website “The Progress and Future of the Clean Air Act,” qualified for the National Event! Only four other students from Heights have qualified for Nationals in the over two decades that Heights has been competing in the NHD contest. In addition, Abbie K.’s exhibit, “The Book of Mormon: How a Book Changed History and Modern Life,” achieved “second alternate” status. Being named an alternate means that a student has attained one of the top four spots in the state. For Abbie, this means that if both of the nationals qualifiers from Wisconsin are unable to attend the National contest in June, Abbie’s exhibit will become a qualifier. The contest represents quite a commitment of time and effort. After completing a project, students compete in a series of contests beginning at the local level. The top two projects in each of the 50 states, D.C., U.S. territories, and international schools qualify to compete in the National Contest. “To make it to the National Contest is always a remarkable achievement,” said NHD Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “We are so proud of [students’] efforts to uncover, analyze, and share history in the projects they choose to pursue.” More than 400 historians and education professionals served as judges for the students’ work, and more than 100 students from across the country were awarded cash prizes between $500 and $2,000 each, for superior work in specific judging categories. About National History Day® (NHD) NHD is a non-profit organization based in College Park, Maryland, that seeks to improve the teaching and learning of history. The National History Day Contest was established in 1974 and currently engages more than half a million students every year in conducting original research on historical topics of interest. Students present their research as a documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, or website. Projects compete first at the local and affiliate levels, where the top entries are invited to the National Contest at the University of Maryland at College Park. NHD is sponsored in part by, HISTORY®, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Park Service, Southwest Airlines, the Crown Family Foundation, The Better Angels Society, the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation, and the Pritzker Military Museum & Library. For more information, visit nhd.org. 2024 NHD State qualifiers from Wisconsin Heights! L to R: Brenna S., Nathan P., Anna J., Ryan F., Bela M., Taylor Z., Maya L., Amelia P., Abbie K., Travis D.

It was Cake Week in Intro to Culinary last week. Classes began with a basic cake and frosting recipe, culminating in "Cake Wars," where each group had the chance to customize their cakes, decorations, and flavors. At the end of the week, there was only one winner in each class, but really, didn't everyone win since everyone left with cake!?

7th grade math played a competitive game of Connect Four. In teams, they found the area of composite shapes (multiple shapes put together), and if they got a problem right, they put a post-it on the Connect Four board. The #VanguardPride team with the most fours in a row won the game. What a fun way to study for an upcoming quiz!

Over the weekend, the Student Council of Wisconsin Heights High School had an amazing time at the state conference organized by the Wisconsin Association of School Councils. The event took place at the Madison West Marriott. Wisconsin Heights was proud to host the State Conference Competitions for the weekend. The competition was judged by members of the Wisconsin Heights School Board, with special guest Michelle McGrath, the former WASC Executive Director and our future Superintendent in attendance. This part of the event was sponsored by Wick Buildings and Elite Embroidery and Screen Printing. The students who took part enjoyed bonding with their peers, enhancing their leadership abilities, and improving their council. This was the first year that the council has been active since the pandemic. The group is guided by Advisor Craig Braunschweig, with support from Jamie Van Den Berg. Additionally, Mr. Braunschweig was chosen as the Region 5 High School Advisor for the WASC Collaborative Leadership Council (CLC). Lydia Crowe and Emma Adler had the honor of presenting awards during the award ceremony. Well done to everyone involved! #VanguardPride

Mrs. Meinholz gave them each $1,000 to invest, and each week, the students have to keep track of the stock they have invested in to see if they have lost or gained money! Here are our four top investors for the week! The top investor made $19.76, most of which came from his investment in Amazon! #VanguardPride
